It’s important to protect your teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue from impact or damage when playing sports. Damage to these areas can cause long-lasting issues that are hard to overcome. To prevent life-long injury, we design custom-fitted mouthguards that help cushion impact to the face. Our mouthguards minimize the risk of broken teeth, and injuries to your mouth’s soft tissues and jaw.
Teeth grinding and clenching, known as Bruxism, can cause abrasive damage to the surfaces of your teeth, which may increase the risk of chipping and cracking. Our nightguards are fitted to protect your teeth from the effects of bruxism.
Cleanings address the build-up of tartar and plaque. During your cleaning, your hygienist will use special tools to remove build-up, especially in hard-to-reach places like between teeth and along the gum line. Then, your teeth will get a polish using a special paste and polisher. The last step is a professional flossing and fluoride treatment, as prescribed by your dentist.
Dry Mouth is a common side effect of many medications, including everyday allergy medications, so many patients present with this condition. Dry mouth can contribute to tooth decay and periodontal disease, so it’s important that we address it when it occurs. If you’re experiencing dry mouth, we’ll be able to work with you and figure out the best course of action. Most of the time, dry mouth is a condition that is best treated with mouth rinses, lozenges, and in some cases, fluoride treatments.
At every visit, you’ll receive an oral exam that checks for the early signs of decay, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. During your exam, we may take x-rays or other images, and we’ll discuss your current treatment plans, or, if you’re a new patient, we’ll work to develop a treatment plan. We’ll also take the opportunity to check for plaque and tartar build up and suggest the treatment options we see working best for your situation.
Fluoride treatments are a safe and effective way to prevent cavities, especially in children. Fluoride strengthens teeth by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, which improves their resistance to decay. Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally occurring, so it’s safe for use in patients of all ages. We suggest that children receive fluoride treatments twice a year, following cleaning appointments.
At Fairmont Family Dentistry, we understand that oral cancer is a serious concern and affects thousands of people every year. That’s why we check for it at every appointment. When we perform your initial exam, we’ll pay close attention and check for signs of oral cancer, including discolored patches on your mouth’s soft tissue, as well as lumps and bumps inside your mouth and neck. If we see any indications, we’ll work with you to determine the best course of action.
We’re here for your whole family. We’re experienced in treating children and will make sure your child is set up for dental health success! Maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile is important and starts with your child being comfortable at our office. During their first appointment, we’ll help them get comfortable by introducing them to Dr. Erickson. After a gentle exam, we’ll count their teeth and gently clean them. We’ll work with you to start building good oral health habits and discuss necessary preventative care such as sealants and fluoride treatments.
Sealants are a great tool to help prevent tooth decay. Sealants protect teeth with deep pits and grooves that are more likely to trap food. Sealants are made of a composite resin mixture and are applied to teeth, then hardened with a special curing light. Sealants help protect teeth for years, making them extremely useful for pediatric patients.
